At Proud Feathers Initiatives, our mission is to provide essential support to members of the African LGBTQI community seeking asylum in the UK. We strive to create a safe, welcoming environment where those in need can find refuge, understanding and respect as they rebuild their lives.
We support individuals who have been forced to flee persecution, torture, and indefinite detention because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Our name reflects a core value that lies at the heart of our work: the pride, resilience, and dignity of our community. Many of us come from countries where living openly as LGBTQI is impossible, and where secrecy is necessary for survival in the face of relentless and visible persecution.
Proud Feathers Initiatives offers a social community where African LGBTQI asylum seekers and refugees can feel safe and at peace. We empower our members to heal from the deep oppression they experienced within their families and communities. We walk alongside them throughout the often stressful asylum process and continue to provide support as they settle and integrate into life in the UK.
We advocate for justice by challenging harmful anti-LGBTQI laws across African countries and by calling out the racism, homophobia, and systems of marginalisation perpetuated by certain pastors, politicians, and institutions. We believe in a world where human rights are upheld for all, where those persecuted for their sexuality or gender identity are protected and supported, and where the public is made fully aware of the injustices and hardships these individuals endure through absolutely no fault of their own.
